How do you select winter undergarments (undershirt and long underwear) for outdoor activitity in winter.?
Outdoor outfitters and catalogs carry a wide array of underwear for outdoor activity like hiking, including something called performance underwear, Under Armor, expedition, Cresta. Garments are made of synthetics, cotton, silk. It’s overwhelming.
Winter undergarments: you are asking about base layers. Cotton base layers are rotten because cotton absorbs and does not quickly release water. Water transmits heat away from your body about twenty times faster than air. Therefore, you do not want to be wet in cotton base layers. The reason that synthetics and silks are used is to quickly dissipate water and remove it from your skin to keep you warm and dry. More complicated and overwhelming, you need to determine whether you need lightweight, midweight, or heavyweight base layers. If you intend to keep moving, then lightweight probably makes sense for you. If you are looking for sleepwear at below-freezing temperatures, you may want one set of heavyweight base layer. Brands include: Hot Chillys, Under Armour, Duofold, Columbia.
