“methane” in Bromochlorodifluoromethane (Halon 1211) not the same as methane?
Just as a point of curiosity. I’m studying different types of fire extinguishers in one of my fire science classes, and started poking around online to learn about Halon 1211, Bromochlorodifluoromethane. I never did finish basic chemistry, so beyond different types of bonds and identifying some compounds I don’t have a strong background in chemistry (although I do have an eye for breaking apart words). The chemical formula for Halon 1211 is CF2ClBr, and the spelled out name has the word “methane” in it; but the formula for methane itself is CH4. There’s no hydrogen in Halon 1211. What am I missing here?
You can be as advanced as you like in your answer, I’ll do what I can to look things up and break down your response so I can understand it, but do remember that I have only about half a college-level course level of chemistry exposure and understanding. (The last thing I remember learning in class was polar something or other – with the squiggly line and the + or – next to it.)
Ok, well I’m gonna use the formula you provided: CF2ClBr
This is an organic compound and organic compounds are named differently from inorganic compounds which you’re probably more familiar with. This compound would be Bromo-chloro-difluoromethane because it is a methane molecule in which the Hydrogens have been replaced by substituent groups.
The Notice that it is named in alphabetical order? Bromo, then Chloro then Fluoro? This is how organic compounds are named. Bromo tells you there’s a Bromine atom, Chloro tells you there’s a Chlorine atoms, and difluoro tells you there are two Fluorine atoms on this compound. The name methane tells you that it has one Carbon because meth- means 1 Carbon and -ane tells you that this compound only contains single bonds. And that’s pretty much how the name is derived.
If it were just methane then that tells you that it’s the saturated hydrocarbon methane that is being referred to which has the formula CH4. Meth- tells you that it has 1 Carbon, -ane tells you that it has only single bonds and from that you know that it is saturated if it has only single bonds and only hydrogens attached to the Carbons.
If you want to know more search “organic nomenclature” on google/yahoo and see what comes up. It should give you some more information and how to name these.
