My twin is going through the Academy but now she needs to decide on a flashlight. Can you recommend the best?
The choices have been narrowed down to either a Streamlight SL-20X LED Flashlight or Streamlight SL-20XP LED Flashlight. Does anyone here think one model is better than the other, and why? Moreover, does someone have a different recommendation and if so, why? Thanks everyone!
One more important detail to mention is that she has a small waist, and given that she might have to hit perpetrators over the head with something, she probably won’t have room for both a flashlight and a baton. Please keep this in mind in making the recommendation.
XP for the win. Regardless of which you may choose, stay with Stinger. I have dropped, submersed it in water, and ran it over with the crusier (more than once…) and it still works as good as the day I got it, 6 years ago.
I am not a fan of LEDs. They are very bright, but not very powerful. With my Stinger XP I can shine that light a block away and see everything like daylight, try doing that with an LED light and you’ll see why it’s not my first choice. I do carry an LED as a back-up, but mostly because it’s small and fits in my pocket.
I have a 27 inch waist. I carry comfortably a double mag pouch, a stinger XP, radio, 21in ASP, glove pouch, mace, a taser and two sets of cuffs, and of course, my firearm. Get the the hanging cuff holders to free up some room, just make sure you get the ones that you pull upwards on to release, that way no one can pull them off of you.
I do not recommend carrying a mag-lite or having the holder for one. When you pull your flashlight out, you leave a perfect ring to grab ahold of and swing you around with.
