What does it mean if something (such as a fire extinguisher) does not meet commercial compliance codes?
I am trying do buy a fire extinguisher for home safety, and I’ve done a lot of research on different types of fire extinguishers and how they work and what not, and the dry chemical fire extinguisher seems pretty safe. It uses pressurized sodium bicarbonate to put out fires (which is just household baking soda).
However, on websites that sell this kind of fire extinguisher there is always a sentence in the description that reads “Disposable fire extinguishers do not meet commercial compliance codes.”

Usually, fire codes require a rechargeable fire extinguisher, that has to be inspected annually. If the inspection tag is not up to date, it is a violation of the fire code.
This does not apply to fire extinguishers in a home. Fire extinguishers are not required at all in homes in most places, so there is no inspection requirement.
What it means is that you cannot legally use the home unit in question, for commercial applications.
Also, note that the extinguisher you link to is a Class B and C fire extinguisher. It is not an ABC class. This means it is good for burning liquids and electrical fires, but is not rated for normal fires where dry material is burning. That means it may not be effective in a normal home fire.
I highly recommend an ABC class extinguisher.
