Cold weather hunting-shooting: Do you use bare hands, gloves, take the gloves off at the last minute, what?
I hunt in the Angeles National Forest behind Los Angeles. It goes up to 10,000 feet. Deer season being in the Winter, it can get quite cold opening day, at the 4,000-5,000 foot level where I am waiting on my stand for deer. I get cold easily. I normally wear a glove on my weak (non trigger) hand, and keep my shooting hand in my pocket.
What do people from really cold places like Minnesota or Alaska do? Just learn to shoot with thick gloves?
I have shooter’s gloves that I use, because my body temp runs hotter than most. Just in case, I also have fleece gloves that are waterproof. The index finger also comes down for better trigger feel. It seems like I have another pair of thinner gloves. But I am also in the market for something that is warm, but not so bulky. It’s not improbable, but highly unlikely that I will run into snow and that kind of severe weather in the middle of October. That is unless I go to the farthest reaches of my hunting area, in the Cascade Mountains.
By the way, I usually try to bare hand while I shoot, for as long as I can tolerate it in extreme cold weather.
