I’m visiting DC next week and need any tips anyone has really. What’s the style, what kind of hats are OK?
I’m a woman and going alone (not by choice) so any tips on safety, where not to go, reputable tour companies. I’m staying near the National Mall. How hard is the metro to figure out? Any thing anyone has to offer, would be appreciated.
There is very little crime around the National Mall…plenty of police patrolling that area. Never-the-less, use some common sense…
A purse with straps that go over your shoulder is a good idea. That way a purse snatcher would have to pull you along with them. Better yet, when going out for a walk, leave your purse in the hotel room (locked in your luggage) and only carry what you need in a smaller handbag (also with a shoulder strap).
Most hotels and motels will have some sort of map. Airports also have a magazine called “The Washington Flyer” that usually has a simple map on the inside centerfold area.
The Metro subway system is one of the cleanest, safest and easiest to understand in the nation. You should have no problem on it. Fare cards can be purchased with a credit card at the machines in the lobby area of each station…but be aware that sometimes those machines will not accept credit cards (malfunction) so have some cash on you too.
Make sure you bring along some warm clothes (layered). The temps in November can be anywhere from 80F to 20F, with about 50F being the norm for this time of year.
Comfortable walking shoes are a must! Yes, the Metro can take you longer distances, but if you wish to simply travel from the US Capitol Building to the Lincoln Memorial (the length of the National Mall), that is about a one mile walk! Plenty to see in between those two landmarks…but comfortable walking shoes are on the top of the list of things to bring.
A cheap place to eat on the National Mall is the food court located inside the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. They feature McDonald’s there and some pizza and submarine sanwiches. The prices at that MickyDee’s will be higher than you are accustomed to, but it’s still the cheapest place for a quick bite to eat. They accept credit cards too.
Be sure to visit each of the Smithsonian Museums. Air & Space is my absolute favorite. They do have a security line to walk through to gain entrance, so just don’t have any knives or aerosols in your purse or bag.
Keep your touring confined to the National Mall area and you will be fine. Just for your information, Virginia is safer than Maryland. So, any long distance excursions by Metro subway should be into Virginia (Arlington National Cemetery is another interesting place).
