Should driver’s ed students be made to take a bike safety course first?
As a cyclist (and a driver) I wonder of our roads would be safer if teens learning to drive first took a bicycle safety course first. They would train to drive in traffic, learn the rules of the road and learn basic skills like being attentive and hand signals.
I agree that cyclists should follow the rules of the road too. They should also be ticketed for violating them. The point is to educate better drivers AND cyclists.
As far as I know, most kids in grade 1 and 2 (lower grades) take bicycle safety at their schools.
It might be a good idea though to remind ourselves about cyclists and remember what it was like riding your bike around before you began driving your car………AND you will probably STILL be riding your bike from time to time to protect the environment, right? When riding your bike, remember what it’s like to be a driver with bikes on the road too.
