Will I contract herpes from changing linens from clinical?
I’m studying nursing, and durning clinical I was caring for a patient who had herpes. I changed her sheets without wearing any personal protective equipment (PPE). Right after, I washed my hands. I don’t know if that was enough to get rid of whatever I might be carrying. Now, I’m so anal about what I touch and about cleanliness. The minute I got home, I took off my scrubs and put it in the wash. I haven’t touched my bag in a while because I feel like it’s contaminated. I feel like I’m going insane.

Herpes blisters produce fluid which is heavily loaded with the virus, which allows it to be highly transmissible; however, it needs to cross a mucus membrane or enter through an abrasion to cause infection.
Assuming you washed your hands properly before you touched any mucus membranes and provided you didn’t have any lacerations at the time you should be fine.
If you’re really worried about it wash your bag and wear gloves next time. If you are going to be a nurse you need to be able to deal with these things.
