When fire fighting a fire always ensures your escape route is clear.
care must be taken to select and use the appropriate type of extinguisher for type of fire.

when using water to put out a fire, the optimum amount of water is that which will completely turn to steam while at the same time lowering the temperature of whatever is burning to the boiling point of water.
if it’s possible, take the fire outside. ie if it’s a wastebasket, take the whole thing outdoors.
if it’s possible, cover it to cut off the air.
