Alternatives to blue emergency lights?
I am a junior firefighter and I am not allowed to have a blue emergency light on my vehicle until I am 18 years old. Currently, I am not driving, so my parents are the ones who take me to the fire station when I get a call. A lot of the time, I miss the first fire engine out because of all the traffic. Can someone please give me a few ideas on how to let people know that I am responding to an emergency. I was thinking about maybe flashing my head lights quickly and blowing my horn to try and get other drivers to let me pass. A lot of you out there might say that I don’t need to get to the station quickly because juniors aren’t as important. Well at my station, Juniors have gear, can ride on the engine, and participate in extinguishing the fire. So I do need to get to there fast, but with caution. If anyone has an answer to this question, please let me know. Any answer will be a big help, and could possibly help me to save someones life. Thank you.
Getting to the fire station safely and legally is your responsibility. Honking your horn and flashing your lights in a civilian car is illegal pretty much everywhere.
There is no way other drivers and pedestrians will know who you are or WHY you are driving this way. If you can’t get to the station on time, that really is just too bad. The need for you to be on that engine does NOT outweigh the risks you pull on the road trying to get there.
