Tips on Warm Winter Wear for Riding?

I’m at a new barn now, and I seem to get colder while riding. We ride outside quite a bit and the wind really hurts. I’m fine until we have to walk and cool down. Do you guys have any tips on what to wear to stay warm? I currently have long johns, jeans, t-shirt, hoodie, heavy winter coat, and two pairs of socks on. I’m contemplating some coveralls and a Carhartt for Christmas. Are they really as warm as they look? Any good gloves/socks/hats that anyone has found? I have to wear a helmet so a hat won’t last long if it can’t fit underneath. I was also wondering if the ninja looking face cover ups from State Line Tack worked. I’ve always wanted one but my mom thinks they look stupid. Any experience with them?

First of all, I recommend getting warm jeans. Many jeans in today’s department stores are thin and crappy. Make sure to buy something thick and quality, like Wrangler or Carhartt jeans. They are expensive, but so worth it. They even make flannel lined jeans. Wear those with a pair of long johns and you will notice the difference immediately. Thermal long sleeved shirts are also nice for riding. Coveralls are nice, and do keep you warm. Carhartts are also very nice coats, and do a great job of keeping the wind out. They are waterproof, but not nylon-like waterproof. They feel kind of soggy when they get wet, but not terrible. I think the good outweighs the bad.

I am going to let you in on a secret. Carhartt (as far as coats go) is just a brand name that you end up paying double for. Try to find a Berne, Walls, or CE Schmidt coat instead of Carhartt. They are just as nice of quality and are just as warm. Berne even has a line of coats made specifically for women, just like Carhartt. The ninja looking face cover-ups are quite warm, but yes, they look ridiculous. lol. I would recommend getting a Carhartt (or knock-off Carhartt) coat with a hood that can fit over your helmet. It should be easily able to do so.

I did buy a pair of gloves from Carhartt that I like. I can’t remember the name of them, but they are warm, waterproof, grippy, and easy to actually use your fingers in. I think they ran about $30-$35, but they were worth every penny.

**EDIT–I’d like to politely disagree with Ang’s idea about Carhartt coats. They are fine for riding. They may be a bit bulkier than nylon coats, but I really think the pros outweigh the cons. There really are no better coats for cold weather than Carhartts or Carhartt-type coats.
