Any plot ideas? I am attempting to write a short story, and I am stuck.?
I beamed as Curt and I walked through Central Park on that beautiful Sunday afternoon, families parked on the grass, the sun rays beaming down through the leaves onto my unnaturally pale skin, the song birds serenading us with their always joyful tunes, but little did I know, this would be the last day, I would ever again see the light of day.
I awoke to the smell of urine, foul body order, and the smell of molds pungent in the damp air. I hadn’t yet opened my eyes, for they felt unusually heavy. I could tell I was naked, and beneath a concrete floor. I managed to open my eyes only to find pitch black, a little sliver of moonlight, shining in from a barred window in the corner of the room revealed an inch of cracked concrete, regardless I couldn’t see my surroundings. Whimpering to the left of me, led me to believe that I was not alone. I tried to speak, but when I opened my mouth, no sound escaped it. I immediately thought of Curt.
I’m going to reccomend two really good books to you, which I think anyone who’s starting to write should read.
The first is “Everything I know about writing” by John Marsden. Although, it might go a bit over your head if you aren’t Australian, its still quite good.
The second is “Rewriting: A creative approach to fiction” by David Michael Kaplan, which has some useful hints on revising.
My teacher gave me both to read when I was struggling with ideas, and I found they really helped.
Also, you shouldnt really ask others for plot ideas, because its teaching you to lean on a crutch. If you’re stuck, experiment with different points of view, introducing new characters or just fleshing out your characters a little.
I noticed, too, you used a few cliches in your excerpt. Try and avoid using the first word that leaps to mind- think about your metaphors.
Good writing is made without obviously trying to be clever. Be a little simpler, and a little clearer. That, and you’re telling too much. You need to think of a way to infer things.
Also, ditch the phrases “unnaturally pale skin,” ” song birds serenading” and “regardless I couldnt see my surroundings”. The first sounds odd, the second just doesnt work and the third- huh? If you cant see them, why are you describing them? Just describe how dark it was instead.
