Cut Off Saw or Masonry Saw?
No doubt about it, but that recent economic indicators show that the world economy is once again on the rise and you know what this means if you’re in any of the building trades. It means that work will once again be booming in time.
So now’s the time to shop for tools before prices on them start picking up as a reflection of consumer demand and for masons the choice can fall between a cut off saw, or a masonry saw. Of course it’s nice to have both, but the fact is that neither of these tools is cheap.
Cut off saws come in several variations but the one thing that they pretty much most all of them have in common is that they have tables. Now this isn’t “set in stone” because there are larger cut off saws that are handheld but those are for the most part heavy gasoline powered models.
In general cut off saws are meant for larger cuts on bigger pieces of material. Now of course larger pieces can be cut with smaller saws, by for instance going around your piece of stock, but it’s just real hard to have the cut line fall perfectly where you started.
So this is where a good hefty cut off saw with a nice sturdy table comes in real handy. Cinder-block clean cuts for example that would be a difficult task with a hand held masonry saw, are a cinch with a cut off saw.
Even so for work like tile roofing, you simply can’t get through the day without a nice light, and portable masonry saw. Also another thing to keep in mind for roofing with a hand held masonry saw is that you really don’t need that large a cutting tool.
Particularly if you’re going to be doing flat concrete roofing tile work on a steep pitched roof, you’ll be better off with a smaller saw. Don’t get a cheap model either because at some point in its life, the saw is going to slide off the roof.
Still yet, one more reason to go with a smaller saw if you can get by with one and this even applies to a cut off saw, is that you will have to buy blades for them. Which ever saw you choose, diamond blades are expensive, and large diamond blades are real expensive.
Of course you can always go with cheaper diamond blades and you’ll have no trouble finding discount diamond blades online but the problem there is that they just don’t last as long. Also better quality diamond blades are designed to dissipate heat better, and resist warping.
Finally your last big tip is to pick up a nice 50 foot extension cord with your masonry saw if that’s what you end up with, and switch it out with the short cord that the saw comes with. With a nice long attached cord you don’t have to worry about unplugging, and you can grab it if the saw ever starts to slide off the roof.
