what would happen if you use a halon extinguisher on a magnesium fire?
this was brought up on shop class but the teacher didn’t explain what would happen. just wondering
The key to stopping a magnesium fire is to smother it so oxygen cannot come in contact with it. Generally, that means coating it with a dry chemical extinguisher. Halon is not efficient enough to remove all the oxygen, and it would not likely stop the entire fire. And once there is no more halon, the oxygen just returns to flare up the fire again. It is not a recommended extinguishing fire agent.
