Knitting a thumb on gloves from fingers to cuff?
My wife is working on a pair of fingerless gloves and is knitting in the direction of fingers to cuff. She is having the hardest time attaching the thumb.
It would be greatly appreciated if you gould give detailed instruction or a link to good pictures that show her how to do a thumb gusset or attach a thumb so that she doesn’t have to undo her work and start over in the other direction. Thank you.
Fingerless, huh? And here I was, picturing four disembodied fingers on a circular needle and a knitter Kitchenering the inner sides of the fingers together before beginning knitting the hand part in rounds.
If the mitts are also thumbless, try this:
1. Knit the mitts in the round to the point where the thumb goes.
2. At the thumb location, cast off the number of stitches for the inside of the thumb (the ones you’d cast on if you were knitting in the other direction).
3. In the next row, at the thumb location, cast on the number of stitches for the outside of the thumb (the ones you’d put on a holder or cast off if you were knitting in the other direction).
4. Continue in rounds, decreasing the thumb gusset (the cast-on stitches) in your preferred pattern.
