Firefighters Protective Clothing

NFPA 1991 standard?

Hi guys. Does anyone know about the NFPA 1991 Standard on designing, manufacturing and approving of protective clothing? Does it specifiy a heat tolerant for firefighter suit? and if yes? what is the max. temperature.

Im looking for suit that allow entry to flame with max temperature of 1200C but was unable to find the right manufaturer as im no good with firefigting standards and abbreviations.

Thanks a lot for your time. Trungdauto

Actually, the NFPA standard you are referring to is 1971 not 1991. NFPA 1971 is the Standard on Protective Ensemble for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting. NFPA 1991 is the Standard on Vapor-Protective Ensembles for Hazardous Materials Emergencies.

And to answer your question about the heat, no. The problem with specifying a heat range is that the coat, gloves and trousers can with stand the heat better that the human inside of it. Gear is designed to provide protection while engaged in firefighting activities, but is limited by the ability of the wearer. The helmet and protective hood cannot withstand as much heat as the coat, gloves, and trousers because they do not offer the three layers. Outer shell, moisture barrier, and inner liner.

The only suit that will get you anywhere close to the temperature your looking for is an ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting) suit. It’s able to “reflect the heat” better than structural gear, but does not offer better protection against direct flame impingement. You can use this suit to fight fire on the outside, but not the inside.

I’m sorry, but you’re not going to find a suit that claims that it can withstand up to 1200C or 2192F. Certain metals melt at this point. Just think about what that can do to a human body!
