Attention Firefighters!!!!?
When you become a firefighter what equipment do you receive? i.e. helmet, boots, etc. I need to make a list!!!
For structural firefighting you’ll receive:
Bunker coat and pants
Nomex hood
Gloves
Rubber or leather structural boots
Structural firefighting helmet
Face mask
Flashlight (Typically)
If you will be involved in rescue and extrication, departments sometimes issue:
Rescue turnouts or rescue coveralls, which are lighter than bunkers
Rescue helmet, again, smaller and lighter than a structural helmet
Extrication gloves, which are lighter, more dexterous and have better grip and blood born pathogen protection (If you’re going to be dealing with patients, put on your exam gloves, then your extrication gloves over them), than structural gloves
Boots, if not included with your rescue turnouts
If you’ll be involved in wildland firefighting you’ll get wildland turnouts and goggles. I have never had any experience with wildland gear so I cannot tell you what it includes, beyond that.
Some things that may or may not be included, and if they are not you will want to buy, are:
A second flash light- very important
Webbing and/or rope, length depending on your district. If you are in a small town, like me, with very few buildings over two stories, you’ll be fine with 20 to 25 foot of webbing or rope. As your buildings get higher, your webbing will get longer. Obviously, there is a point where it becomes unreasonable to carry that much webbing- but I’m not at that point. Haha.
A multi-tool, like a leatherman.
Wire cutters. I prefer a separate pair, aside from my leatherman.
Door chalks/wedges. I prefer “Cherry bomb” wedges, which are essentially wooden dowels cut about an inch long with a nail driven into it and bent over on itself to hang on a hinge.
Window punch – kept in helmet strap for easy access with gloves
Radio mic keeper
A spanner, or folding spanner.
I also keep a 9 foot strap in my pocket, along with spare exam gloves. We run a lot of EMS.
