what were the fire suppression systems and fire equipment used on/at the W.T.C. Towers?
Or if anyone has any information or websites I could go to and find information on this subject.
Highrises depend on water sprinkler systems and standpipe systems to protect the integrity of the steel structure. (If fires get too hot, steel melts.) Early warning can be key in preventing fires from getting too large. Smoke detectors and waterflow alarms are connected to fire alarm systems that often call the fire department or monitoring facility automatically. When sprinkler heads fuse, fire pumps and water storage tanks are used to keep the pressure up. The sprinkler systems are fully automatic. Responding fire personnel will rely on the standpipe systems (often equipped with fire hose already attached).
These systems were all in place in the WTC. The problem was the fire didn’t start in a conventional manner. We all know what happened. First off, there was no build up of fire, so any of the early warning systems (alarms at whatnot) were not activated. Although both structures survived the impact, the resulting damage was so catastrophic to the building’s core systems (sprinkler piping destroyed, alarm wiring severed) that there was no effective way to get water to the fires.
Undoubtedly, there were other smaller suppression systems throughout the structures. These smaller systems, usually use a gaseous agent, like halon, suppress fires that orginate in a small protected space, such as a computer room or lab. These types of systems would be useless agaist the type of fire faced by the trade centers.
The protective sprays and foams that are placed on the steel can only last so long. And much of that was also damaged by the impact of the airliners. The resulting fires were so hot that without the suppression systems the steel eventually gave way in both buildings.
If the buildings would have lasted longer, it is doubtful water could have been pumped up from the lower floors unless a way could be found to valve off the busted open pipes from above that would have caused the systems to lose most of thier pressure.
This is a dilemma that has confounded building designers since the attack. The discovery channel did a special on catastrophic structural failures a while ago, and the WTC was featured as one. How to do you design fire suppression systems that have enough redundancy that can survive an attack of that magtatude? It may not even be possible. I have attached a link that talks about this very issue.
Forgive spelling errors, I am not the greatest and spell checker wasn’t working.
I hope this is what you were looking for.
