What would happen to jobs funded and supported by the government in an Anarchist society?
Specifically Anarcho-Syndicalism, Collectivist Anarchism, etc:
My mom takes care of a mentally challenged woman, and is payed by the government to do this; if we were to evolve into an anarchist society how would she make a living doing this?
;And how would police and fire and rescue men get paid, they sell no product, so how would they make a living also?
Thanks for any insight; and please no bashing these political ideologies. I just want your opinions and ideas.
Depending on how you assemble the pieces, anarchist society could operate in different ways. Some anarcho-syndicalists would just say the main difference would be that every workplace was run democratically. If you were self-employed, this wouldn’t change much at all. If people in the community felt they needed a fire department, they still contribute funds to the fire department – the main difference would be that the fire fighters get to elect their fire chief (or alternatively, they may not have a chief at all and use direct democracy instead).
Other visions of anarchism do not include the need for money at all, so you wouldn’t have to worry about funding police departments or health workers. In Ursula Le Guin’s The Dispossessed, basically, everything was free. In today’s countries with universal health care, people just show up at a hospital and get the care they need. In the anarchist society described by Le Guin, people just show up at a “shop” and pick up whatever they needed – kind of like universal health care, except it’s not just about health care.
