Looking for a fiction book with an LNG carrier off the coast of New York City?
I’m looking for a fiction techo-thriller-style book I read back in the 1980s. It’s about a liquified natural gas (LNG) carrier off the coast of New York City. One of the tanks ruptures, and the super-cooled gas cloud poses a major threat to the city. Here are some things I remember about the book:
- The LNG carrier is on the cover. It has huge domes on its deck which are the gas storage tanks.
- There’s a scene about a fire boat which goes into the cloud. The men on board were trying to protect themselves from the gas and cold by gathering around a hose pointing up into the air, but they all ended up frozen to death in a “bubble” on the deck of their ship.
- One of the characters is a college-age guy who’s about to be cut off by his folks.
