How does the carbon dioxide in fire extinguishers cause frostbite eventhough it’s at room temperature?
The carbon dioxide starts out at room temperature, but it is compressed in the canister and expands when it’s released. The expansion of a gas cools that gas down and so the result is cold gas.
Gas molecules attract each other and so energy is needed to pull them apart. When the gas expands, some of the heat energy turns into potential energy (the energy needed to pull the gas molecules apart), cooling the gas down.
