Fire Extinguisher Enclosures

Does anyone know if fire extinguishers have to be in an enclosure like glass or cage in schools?

Probably not. The codes and standards that govern the use and placement of fire extinguishers only require that they are accessible, appropriate for the hazard, placed so that certain travel distances aren’t exceeded, and that they are mounted to the wall at appropriate mounting heights. (All of these details are found in the NFPA 10 standard, see link below.)

That being said, some jurisdictions, insurance companies, and yes, even some school districts, may have their own special set of rules or requirements that may mandate the use of cabinets. This might be to cut down on misuse or tampering since they are in a school. So I can’t say for certain what the requirement may be in place for your school.
