What are my rights as a tenant in an apartment complex?
The reason I am asking is because our apartment complex gave out a notice a couple of weeks ago for their “annual inspection.” They do these inspections by coming into the apartment to check your pipes, fire extinguisher etc… However, they will be entering our apartment anytime over a span of 8 days. (Anytime from Nov. 23rd-30th) I called our front office to get a little more detail, she let me know that staff members knock on door before they enter your apartment (they said we aren’t required to be present) and that if there is no answer after a couple knocks, they have keys and will let themselves in. I am VERY uncomfortable with this, have talked with a couple of other people and they have never heard an inspection like this. 8 days is a long time to be wondering whether or not we’ve been inspected or about to be inspected. How do I go about letting management know that I need a little more specific time for this “annual inspection?”
You were given more than 24 hour written notice which in most states is sufficient under the law. Plus a date range has been stated and the apartment owner is stuck with it.
Put away your valuables. Also, ask if you can schedule a specific time and date for your inspection. The team of people who do this should have the complex mapped out and know where they will be on what day. If there are 100 units and it takes 15 minutes per unit then it is not hard to figure out a schedule. The apartment manager and staff are being lazy if they don’t have a schedule. All they are doing in inspecting. If repairs are necessary then they can do those some other time. They may not have the necessary equipment, parts and know how to do all of the repairs as they come up.
