My apartment move-in/condition report has been rejected by my landlord as ‘opinion’. What to do now?
We already signed the lease and gave her first and last months rent plus two month security deposit. Haven’t even moved in yet and this is a disaster. She hasn’t made repairs she agreed to using ‘bad contractors’ as her excuse but I’ve talked to these people and they tell me they were never contracted for the work that needs to be done. We’re not talking minor issues. The kitchen and bathroom are not usable. Several windows that open to a fire escape ladder are missing handles and locks. Downstairs fire alarm has been ripped out of the ceiling. What to do? We have to move and she has all of our money.
You don’t say where you live. But generally, if you inform the landlord that repairs are needed and he refuses to provide them, you may do the repairs yourself and deduct the cost from your rent check. You should check your local laws, since in many places there is a maximum amount that you may deduct per year.
