How physically fit must an EMT/EMS be?
I’ve been very interested in this as a possible career, but this was just something I’ve been wondering. I’ve never been considered an athlete or anything and to be honest I’m currently pretty overweight, but in every job I’ve had I’ve had the ability to hustle and act with urgency.
To be more specific I’m 5′10 and 230 lbs.
Being a “bigger” guy has never really kept me from doing anything, but would you say it could this time around?
I know a few EMT’s and they’re not in excellent shape. One of them is a female who is at least 50 pounds overweight. Yes it helps to be in good shape for any job but as long as you don’t have a problem lifting patients and loading the guerney into the ambulance your weight or physical appearance won’t be a problem. Being an EMT, Police Officer, etc… requires varying shift work and lots of time on the road. Sometimes this leads to a lot of eating out and quick meals at fast food places. If you aren’t careful, you could become less healthy because you don’t want to make the effort to watch what you eat and bring healthy meals to work with you. The EMT’s and others you see that are in good shape would be healthy regardless of what type of job they have. Good luck! Being an EMT is hard work.
