9/11 New York Emergency Services?
I was just curious how NYFD and NYPD and EMS services responded to calls after 9/11 (ex house fire, medical response) like weeks or a few short months after the attacks. Did they have back up since all there equipment was gone and when they were searching Ground Zero or did they still respond to calls that were in their fire district with out the proper equipment
Funny you should ask this question.
There was a fire the very next day around the corner from my house. I was almost afraid to call 911 because I wasn’t sure the fire department could even show up. (Two local fire houses in my area lost over 10 men each. One was a friend of mine.)
But a fire truck came. It was a really old truck – like from the 50s. I’d seen it before, they used to bring it out for our neighborhood halloween parade. But I guess it was still functional as a fire truck.
So the fire fighters came out, put out the fire, and then the restaurant below in the same building opened up their bar/annex, which wasn’t open yet officially because they didn’t have a liquor license yet, and gave the fire men all a drink. No one reported it, because everyone was so grateful tot hem for everything that had gone on in the past two days.
I must say, while that 1950s era fire truck looked a bit comical, I was really relieved to see it turning the corner when it came. It looked like something normal after a lot of stuff that wasn’t normal at all.
That day, my husband put out the garbage because it was garbage night. He didn’t put out the recycling even though it was the correct night for that, too. But our neighbors did. I thought he was crazy! I said, who’s gonna pick it up right now? Do you think the City has time to think about picking up the garbage???? But indeed, the garbage WAS picked up, on time, too. AND our neighbor’s recycling as well. That’s way better than in a snowstorm. I couldn’t believe it! But it felt like something normal. It really felt good that something normal could happen.
