Yes, there are different kinds of fire extinguishers for different kinds of fires, i.e. there are water based ones, carbon dioxide ones, others that shoot out some sort of powder, etc.
For example, you shouldn’t use a water extinguisher on a grease fire = grease floats, and the water will spread the fire to a larger area. These fires should be put out with CO2 extinguishers, I think.
