What is a good heavy duty detergent for removing grease?
My mom works in the auto industry and brings home her Kevlar cut-resistant gloves. They are covered in black oil-grease-and-crud. We’ve been using floor de-greaser with our basic laundry detergent in hot water. They are clean but still smell like “factory” and have a film deposit on them. What detergents work best for removing grease?
I’d try Simple Green. It’s a concentrated cleaner that is wonderful for anything greasy. Normally, you buy the concentrate and dilute it down to a certain ratio for whatever you’re cleaning but in this case I would use it full strength. It smells good and is non-toxic and biodegradable. You can get it at automotive, hardware and discount stores like Wal-Mart. The cheapest place is Sam’s Club where you get a gallon for less than $9.00. A gallon makes 64 gallons of all purpose cleaner.
Give the gloves a really good soaking spray and just let them lay in a bucket with hot water (just enough to cover the gloves) for at least a couple hours, overnight is even better. Then give them a rinse in hot water and see how they are. You might have to soak them with the cleaner the 2nd time to get them clean. It will be easier once you remove all the build up. Wash with normal laundry detergent.
Depending on what the make up of the cleaners you tried previously, you might have to soak them in hot white vinegar to get the scum out. Now, that will be a bit stinky but the gloves won’t smell like vinegar after they are washed and dried.
