Work clothing for farming?
I’m planning to work on a dairy and arable farm for a year, and being a townie I have no experience of working in the countryside.
Can anyone give me advice on what is considered sensible clothing for working on a farm, and any in-house tips they may have so I don’t stand out to much as a newbie? For instance, Wellington boots are standard foot wear which you’re meant to wear with thick socks, but is it better to wear two sets of socks (one over the other) to reduce slippage? What’s the best thing to wear if the weather is too hot for rubber boots? Should I be looking at wearing overalls or trousers (do you wear trousers under overalls); which is the harder wearing and easier to work in? What’s best to wear in the winter to keep warm (apart from the familiar wax jacket), but still allows you comfort and good freedom of movement. Is a baseball cap okay to wear rather than a flat cap?
If you are going to be working there for a year, you are presumably going to be working through a winter as well as a summer and everything in between. Wellingtons or an equivalent are a must all the way through the year, but you will not be wearing them all the time. You will also need a good pair of treated leather boots. Two pairs of socks are a good idea with the inner pair being polypropylene to wick moisture away from the surfaces of your feet.
Overalls are trousers, of a sort, and are worn as your outerwear. Coveralls are something else and are usually cold-weather wear and worn over either overalls or dungarees. Good-quality denim overalls or dungarees will be fine until you get into cold-weather gear. Then the cordura nylon fabrics and materials such as are used in Carhart outerwear, available in both insulated and uninsulated versions, comes into its own. From more years of year-round outdoor work then I care to mention, I can recommend Carhart apparel, or see what you can find that is similar.
For most work in the summer sun, short-sleeve shirts are fine. However, when haying and handling the bales, the stubble will try to scratch the skin off your arms, so long sleeves, even in the heat, become a form of self-defense.
You will also need good quality foul weather gear. Buy something cheap and you will be back buying more after the first time you really need it.
A broad-brimmed hat and sunscreen should also be considered. Farmers do not have that high a rate of skin cancer for no reason.
There is more you will learn as you go along, but this should get you started.
