A ceramic is a non-metallic and inorganic solid made by the act of heat and succeeded cooling. Ceramic materials have a crystalline or somewhat crystalline structure. Today house hold, commercial and building items and art pieces are made in ceramics. New ceramic materials introduced in 20th century can be used in semiconductors which is a part of ceramic engineering.
Ceramics are classified into four namely, structural, refractory, white wares and technical. Structural ceramics are used to make roof tiles, bricks and floor. Refractory ceramics are used to produce gas fire radiant, glass and steel making crucibles and kiln linings. Tableware, wall tiles and pottery objects are made with white ware ceramics. Technical ceramics are used to make gas burner nozzles, ballistic protection, Space Shuttle program, nuclear fuel uranium oxide pellets, jet engine turbine blades, missile nose cones and bio-medical implants.
Technical ceramics are divided into three material classes namely Oxides, Non-oxides and Composites. Oxides include alumina and zircon while Non-oxides consists of borides, silicides, nitrides and carbides. Particulate durable blends of oxides and non-oxides are examples of Composites. Ceramics have many uses in today’s world. Surely it will find its way to newer areas.
