How do I cut out several crack bricks from brick wall and replace with new ones?
Hi…I have a 3 year old home. I have a few bricks that should have never been laid on my house (cracked all the way through…not cracked in mortar though…not settlement related). I have the name of the mortar colar, brand, and bricks. I just need to know how to grind the old ones out and replace with new ones and some guidance as to how to tuck the new brick in. Also what kind of tool do I need to grind out? Thanks
Thanks. The builder was supposed to take care of this but he ran off…
I restore a lot of brick and will tell you – you don’t use a skillsaw, you use a 4-1/2″ angle grinder with a masonry or tile cutting disk. The smaller tool is easier and safer to use for this and it also affords you better control of the tool.
(1) Cut the joints around the brick as deep as the cutting wheel will penetrate and well beyond the outside (perimeter) line of the brick you’re removing, say half the discs diameter.
(2) With a 1″ masons chisel and a 2lb.mallett break out the old brick and carefully chip out the old mortar.
(3) set in the replacement brick using small wooden shims as spacers to hold the bricks position and spacing relative to the existing joints size.
(4) with a grout bag, which is very similar to a bakers decorating bag, inject your mortar into the open joint all the way around and clean any excess awayfromm the bricks with a sponge and water.
(5) Pull the shims/spacers, inject some mortar in their voids, and use a pointing tool to match the mortars facing. These tools as the others described herein can be purchased at just about every home center and hardware.
If you need any additional help with this don’t hesitate to get in touch.
