Antique RED MARVEL glass fire extinguisher grenade does it contain salt water or carbon tetrachloride?
I have an antique RED MARVEL glass fire extinguisher grenade. I’ve researched for a couple hours and can’t find ANY info about it. I need to know if it contains salt water / brine or the chemical carbon tetrachloride. Any information would be appreciated.
It has a paper tag that says RED MARVEL. THROW AT BASE OF FLAME. GENERAL MACHINE SUPPLY CO. CAMDEN N.J. and it has it’s original hanger that would break the glass if enough heat melted the solder that holds the spring loaded pin.
are you sure “red marvel” is the correct name for it …i cant seem to find anything on this name either.
I did find out that alot of the glass ones made around the 20’s & 30’s contained salt water although carbon tetrachloride(CTC) was introduced in 1912 by Pyrene. They put them in brass or chrome pump containers, but also made a variety consisted of a glass bottle “bomb” filled with the liquid that was intended to be hurled at the base of a fire.The CTC vaporized and extinguished the flames by chemical reaction. The extinguisher was suitable for liquid and electrical fires, and was popular in motor vehicles for the next 60 years.
