Will I be okay after accidental inhalation of ammonium phosphate?
I was outside discharging an ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher that contained ammonium phosphate, well at some point a sprayed a bit and the wind changed direction trying to move I covered my face and eyes with my shirt but got a bit of the stuff in my mouth. I didn’t cough or anything so I don’t think I truly “inhaled” it all the way into my lungs but now I have a slightly salty metallic flavor throughout my mouth that I can just barely taste. I feel fine and don’t think I need to call a poison control center or anything but the flavor in my mouth tastes very bad are there anyways in which I can get rid of it I tried rinsing with some plain tap water that didn’t really help though. So any other suggestions would great.
This is an excerpt from the MSDS for ABC extinguishers manufactured by one of the most highly respected extinguisher producers in America:
“Skin Exposure: In case of contact, wash with plenty of soap and water. Seek medical attention if irritation develops.
Inhalation: If respiratory irritation or distress occurs remove victim to fresh air. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
Ingestion: If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-3 glasses of water to drink and do not induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention. Do not leave victim unattended. To prevent aspiration of swallowed product, lay victim on side with head lower than waist. If vomiting occurs and the victim is conscious, give water to further dilute the chemical.
Medical conditions possibly aggravated by exposure: Inhalation of product may aggravate existing chronic respiratory problems such as asthma, emphysema, or bronchitis. Skin contact may aggravate existing skin disease. Chronic overexposure may cause pneumoconiosis (“dusty lung” disease). ”
Working with fire extinguishers almost every day, I have had my share of extinguishers discharged in my face. In the line of duty I have inhaled, ingested, and exposed my skin to ammonium phosphate and as of yet have felt no affects worse than a little eye irritation.
